Find Spot record 1725/0/0 - Mesolithic to Bronze Age Flint Scatter, Cotton Henge

Fieldwalking survey, undertaken as part of the Raunds Area Project, identified a dense scatter of worked flint in the vicinity of Cotton Henge. The flint dated from the Mesolithic period through to the Bronze Age.

{1} Dense scatter of flint - 639 pieces in 17ha. Area appears to have been long lived with implements from Mesolithic through to Bronze Age. Slight concentrations within middle of dry valley and the henge. Wide range of forms and technological characteristics of flints.

{2} The flint concentration extends along the northern flank of the Raunds Brook for 1km with a total area of 17ha. There are variations in the quantity of flint and relative composition within the scatter. There is considerable evidence for flint-knapping with a comparatively high proportion of parent material. The scatter is mainly of forms attributable to the later Neolithic/early Bronze Age industries, with small discernible Mesolithic and earlier Neolithic fractions and more widespread evidence for post-Beaker Bronze Age activity.
