Summary
St Peter's Street was a broadly east-west aligned street south of St Peter's Church until redevelopment of the area in the 1970s. Freeschool Street lay at its east end aand at the west it joined Green Street/Elephant Lane. Archaeological excavation in the 1970s determined that it probably originated in the late 11th century.

{6}15cm road make-up observed above grey loam with occasional charcoal flecks; finds of few oyster shells & bottle glass & post medieval pottery not retained;
{7}Metalling along line of present St Peter's Street; compact mass of ironstone fragments; finds include furnace bottom or forging slag; lead sheet offcut; worked bone spindle whorl & highly polished antler tool probably once spindle & bone skate & other worked bone included three fragments of antler working waste; road was re-metalled at time of rebuilding of street circa 1410-20;
