Full Description

{1} Iron Age and Romano-British pottery sherds found during fieldwalking. 19 sherds of Iron Age pottery in slight concentrations and 79 sherds of Roman pottery in an even distribution.

{2} A light scatter of some 19 sherds of Iron Age pottery was recovered by fieldwalking. The sherds were distributed on the lower slopes of the valley side with a slight concentration of 6 sherds in the vicinity of the eastern enclosure. No pottery was recovered from the central and western enclosures during reconnaissance. However, more intensive reconnaissance later within the western enclosure recovered 5 sherds. The sherds appear to have a mid to late Iron Age date range, possibly with an earlier element, but the material is only poorly preserved.
By contrast the Roman pottery is more plentiful with an even distribution of some 79 sherds across the valley side. This may simply reflect intensive agricultural activity, possibly related to the Gorse Field and Ham Hill settlements. Slight concentrations of C1st AD grog-tempered ware were found, particularly adjacent to the western enclosure where 18 sherds were collected. These sherds could denote settlement continuing from the late Iron Age. A slight concentration of late Roman material immediately adjacent to the river is difficult to interpret but may represent farmland features or riparian activity.
