Summary

Remains of WWII type 22 pillbox [also recorded as a type 24] with brick shuttering, facing railway in valley below. Built to cover the valley, railway and Welland Viaduct, it is now in a derelict condition.

Full Description

{1} North facing polygonal pillbox of mixed materials (brick/stone/breeze/ concrete).

{2} Visited 15/10/96. Brick exterior surmounted by concrete roof with at least one embrasure visible. Located in hedgerow at side of arable field. Derelict.

{3} Letter and photographs (taken in 1994) of pill box. Notes the strategic importance of the pillbox given its line of sight to the Welland Viaduct.

{4} Included as a local heritage asset within the neighbourhood plan.

{5} Regular type 24 pillbox, with brick shuttering, facing railway in valley below. To cover valley, railway and Welland Viaduct [inside not recorded]

Field visit 6/1994 records it as type 22 pillbox, in a derelict condition. Brick surmounted by concrete, with at least one embrasure visible.
