Summary

A postern gate allowing access from the St John Hospital Master's Garden to the meadows was located between The Plough Inn and Cow Lane and stood until c1850.

Full Description

{1} In the garden wall towards the meadows the small postern is to be found though it cannot be discovered from the inside;See Vignette p.27, drawing by Mr Pretty.

{2} The Masters House had a noble garden with a postern gate opening into the meadow;still traceable.

{3} Wetton describes the postern thus; 'The architectural character of the small postern door-way now remaining in the wall on the south side of the town, towards the meadow, fully agrees with the early date of the walls. A vignette (p.27) shows its style, being that of a flat trefoil-headed arch.

{4} Mentions the small postern near Cow Lane.

{5} Illustration of the postern gate. The description indicates that it was located on the south side of the town between Cow Lane and The Plough Inn and was standing until about 1850.
