This was one of the oldest thoroughfares in the town but was lost when the Mayorhold car park was built.

Full Description

{1}Bearward Street leading from Sheep St to the Mayorhold.,

{2}Bearward Street is named on the map. Leads from Sheep St to Mayorhold.

{3} One of the oldest thoroughfares in the town and connects Sheep Street with the Marehold. The official in charge of bears kept for baiting was known as the bearward.

{4} Four photographs of buildings on Bearward Street taken in 1956 including numbers 32 and 50, as well as the Bearward Arms and Allen's, also one photo of the Bearward Arms dated Autumn 1964;

{5} In the 1504 rental of the town, in the North Quarter into which 'Berwardstrete' ran was a house held by Peytmyn the Jew. Newland in the parish of St Michael seems to have extended into Bearward Street.

{6} Two photos of buildings, noted as being a newspaper shop, also as being on the Mayorhold, dated 16th February 1956;
