Monument record 1301/0/70 - Saxon Settlement, Thorpe End

From the Saxon to Early Medieval period, 6th century to 1066 AD, the site formed one part of a large settlement. See also the further Anglo-Saxon settlement evidence further to the south west at Thorpe End (HER No 1301/0/22)

{2} Dense concentration of early-middle Saxon pottery recovered from area of Iron Age enclosure. Excavation revealed a possible building. Curvilinear slot 0.45m wide and with an excavated length of 4.3m. Plan of structure uncertain as south end of slot may have formed a corner. Postholes located in and around slot may have been to provide additional support to the structure. Further six postholes located around curvature of line - appear to be contemporay, but uncertain if they are related to same structure. Remains of possible clay floor extended over part of the structure. Dating uncertain as three early-middle Saxon sherds found in slot and postholes along with larger quantities of residual Iron Age and Roman pottery. A Saxon ditch also cut the Iron Age enclosure.
