Full Description

{1} Sketch plan of the distribution of military barrack blocks on the Racecourse during WWII taken from RAF aerial photographs.

{2} Concentration of slight and mainly circular earthworks on Racecourse initially interpreted in first report by Dr Welsh as possible Romano-British settlement; second report submitted reveals that this area of Racecourse was used by army in World War II including construction of brick and wooden buildings; it appears likely that many features observed can be attributed to modern usage.

{3} P.7 Photo of trench digging on the Racecourse 1/10/1938. Trenches "to enable those members of the public caught in the open during an air raid to find shelter. They were latter extended and strengthened to form substantial underground shelters".
P.8 Photo of work underway on one of the 5 underground shelters.
P.9 Demonstrating Anderson shelters June 1939 on the Racecourse
p.29 Ref to a First Aid post at the Racecourse Pavilion.
