Full Description

{1} House shown in grassland, Fran Basset Esq.

{4} The park was clearly influenced by the Palladian style and associated connection with the 'natural' setting. An early plan of Evenley Park dating from c 1780 shows an extensive ha-ha to the north-east of the hall. It originally arced across from the mount to the east of the house to the avenued west driveway. About half of the original ha-ha survives having been partly levelled in the east garden and infilled to the west. Mounts to the east and west of the hall, whilst a features of garden design may have also been convenient spoil tips for the soil excavated from the ha-ha ditch. In 1780 both are shown planted with trees. Much of the planting and garden arrangement to the east of the house, which appears in the photographs of the 1930s, was set out in the 1890s.
