{1}Forecourt was originally gravel garden of early C18th;,{2}House was remodelled from 1622 when an east range was built overlooking a new walled garden; early C18th plan shows enclosed garden with corner pavilions to east of house & called The Gravel Garden;,{4}In front of east facade was "The Gravel Garden" surrounded by wall & with garden house at its outer angles; now entirely destroyed;,{6}C19th copy of early C18th plan of gardens shows layout of Gravel Garden adjoining east face of house; rectangular walled area with 2 entrances & further entrance directly into house; central rectangular area appears to indicate edging of trees; on 3 sides surrounded by broad path; 2 small garden buildings stand at end of paths away from house; Gravel garden was clearly Privy Garden enclosed by walls & with walks on 3 sides terminating in east corners with pyramidal-roofed pavilions;
