Summary

A jar of Roman coins was found north-west of the village of Boddington in a field called White-leys in June 1873. The jar was broken; it was red with brown glaze, 7 3/4" high, with a bulbous body, a long neck, a small base and a handle. There were c.360 coins, all 3rd brass, of Emperors ranging from Gallienus to Aurelianus (265 to 275 AD in range). Northampton museum retain the jar fragment and coins. A late 3rd century hoard.

Full Description

{1} About 300 coins found in June 1873 in ploughed field, field name White leys. Recorded in records against various names. Plan.

{2} A jar of Roman coins was found north west of Boddington in a field called White-leys in June 1873. The jar was broken; it was red with brown glaze, 7.75inch high with a bulbous body, a long neck, a small base and handle. There were c.360 coins, all 3rd brass, of emperors ranging from Gallienus to Aurelianus (265-275AD).

{3} 360 coins found at SP480543, now with Northampton Museum.

{4} In 1873 a brown-glazed red pot was discovered in the area of SP480540 containing 360 Roman coins dating mainly from the second half of the C3rd, all 'third brass'.

{5} Gives date range of coins as AD254-275

{7} Northampton museum retain the jar fragment and coins, but have no precise siting. "White leys" is centred at SP 480540 (Field Name Survey 1932 "Upper Boddington' - held Northants CRO) and the hoard has been listed to this area. The field is under clutivation, there is no surface evidence of an archaeological site and no recent finds are known to the present farmer
