Full Description

{1} In 1971 during excavation for new radio masts and cables on the southern section of the defences, part of a ditch was exposed. This showed that the original ditch was dug to a depth of 3m and later recut after some silting. After more silting it seems to have been recut again to a depth of 2.25m with a much narrower profile. It was then abandoned. No finds were made.
Similar evidence was noted in 1918 when a trial trench for ironstone was dug here. Then Edgar and T.J. George noted that the ditch was silted up at least 1.2-1.5m deep.
