Full Description

{1} Earthworks of the shrunken village of Great Houghton. On the east side of the street were five embanked closes with traces of former buildings. One close contained a large circular mound. They were separated from the ridge and furrow by a broad hollow way. The earthworks have been destroyed by modern playing fields. The remains were devoid of buildings before the mid 19th century.

{4} Other earthworks are present with the south western corner of the field which is otherwise occupied by ridge and furrow.

{6} Housing development in the 1960s and 1970s obscured the precise extent and nature of any village earthworks except to the north east where there were in 1972 still a few uneven areas of probable house platforms and a fine sunken road (the East Street as mapped in the C17th). These are almost certainly medieval in origin.
