Full Description
{1} At SP 88796378 an undated stone 'causeway' was revealed and recorded in section during overburden stripping. Set over the clay and silt fill of an EW aligned palaeochannel, the feature comprised a compact layer of sand and medium and large limestone fragments partly overlying a thin layer of woody debris possibly a 'brushwood' layer. The stones were sealed by up to 1m of alluvial clay which itself undaerlay the topsoil. The stone extended N-S across the channel c45m and was c7m wide. Its N and W limits were not determined, but were preserved under a small area of unexcavated ground.
A further palaeochannel was identified on a smililar EW alignment c30m to the north.
