Full Description

{1}{2} Other evidence on the line of the postulated Roman road has been seen near Beanfield Lawn at SP864881. A length of limestone slabs (in size about 12 ins x 9 ins x 2 ins) about 12 ft wide and at least 150 yds long. Only a single layer of stone was found, with extensive scattering due to ploughing. A camber was evident. Much Roman pottery was also found at this point.
Observations by R. Cross at Glyndebourne Gardens also revealed what seemed to be a roadway of limestone, 11-12ft wide, running approximately north-south and lying to the east of the A6003. A section drawn by him shows a layer of stones 3-5 ins thick resting on sandy clay, also 3-5 ins thick, which in turn lay on yellow clay.

{3} At SP864881 a length of limestone slabs, 4m wide and at least 15m long, associated with Roman pottery.
