Summary

A significant quantity of Roman finds were discovered in a garden in Maple Grove (now Beech Close) in 1959. Subsequent roadworks nearby in 1976 identified Roman features including pits and ditches.

Full Description

{1}Finds; 5 Roman coins including 1 Antoninianus of Licinius II; also 4 C2nd - C4th century pot sherds and a worked stone, which was possibly a pivot stone; Found during digging the garden in 1959;

{3}Features; pits and ditches were observed, with associated Roman pottery, during roadworks in redevelopment area; a part of a Roman settlement;

{4} [SP 88129036]. A considerable number of RB potsherds, identified by Graham Webster as late 2nd-4th century AD, and five Roman coins have been found, mainly in the digging of the gardens of Nos. 10-12, Maple Grove, in 1959. The coins were illegible except for an antoninianus of LICINIUS II. A hollowed stone, possibly a pivot or socket stone, was the only evidence of a building. All the finds are in Mr Seaborne's possession.
