Monument record 4760/0/33 - Medieval/Post Medieval Fishpond

Fishpond of probable C14 or C15 date, abandoned by 1728.

{2} The pond had probably been abandoned by 1728 for it is not depicted on the map of that date, though the field to the north was then known as The Fishweir.

{3} FThe Throckmortons, 14c/15c Lords of the Manor made a fishpond by damming the brook. This extends through the fields known as Botany Bay and the Leys. Although the pond has been drained many years and is now grassland the outline is clearly defined. At the outlet the winding channel is quite distinct.

{5} Fishponds (SP 713458) lies NE of Pury End in the bottom of the valley of a small N-flowing stream, on clay at 100 m. above OD. A large roughly rectangular pond cut back into the valley side on the W has a massive dam up to 3 m. high at the N end. There is no trace of an artificial edge on the E side; the steep natural slope seems to have sufficed. The original course of the stream is still visible in the bottom of the pond and to the S. {6} A fishpond of the Throckmortons. In the C14th/C15th the Lords of The Manor made a fishpond by damming the brook. The earthworks comprise a large rectangular pond cut into the valley side to the west and a massive dam up to 3m high at the north end. There is no east side, which may have been formed by the steep hillside alone. The original course of the stream is visible in the bottom of the pond. Plan.

{7} The whole parish was surveyed for medieval fields. At Pury End are fine examples of sunken roads and a large, drained fishpond.
