Summary

Sherds of Iron Age pottery, some described as "Belgic", were recovered from pits which were encountered during quarry working in 1967. The sherds were, in 1969, in the possession of a Mr Dix of Kettering Grammar School Archaeological Society. Excavations in 1970 revealed more extensive traces of Iron Age settlement including ditches, containing pottery and a small quantity of animal bones.

Full Description

{1} Finds consisted almost entirely of potsherds: the small quantity of animal bone recovered was poorly preserved and no metal objects were found. Most of the pottery came from the upper layers of the ditches. The 80 sherds of pottery found during the excavation came from not less than twenty vessels.

{2} SP 85148368. Sherds of IA pottery including some Belgic pieces recovered from pits revealed by quarry working in 1967.

{3} The sherds are in Mr Dix's possession. Enquiries at the quarry office revealed that no further finds have been made from this area.

{4} Iron Age settlement(SP 850837).Excavations in 1970 revealed more ditches containing pottery and a small quantity of animal bones.The pottery appeared to be mainly of Iron Age date.
