Monument record 6307/1 - Islip Ironworks

Summary

The ironworks was founded in 1871. Initially, two blast furnaces were erected with the foundations laid out for four more. The first two furnaces were put into blast in 1873. In 1879 two further furnaces were built, although only two were in blast at once until 1883 when three were in blast at once. During the 1920s the number fell to two until the closure of the furnaces in 1942. Ore and limestone were obtained from the surrounding quarries.
