Full Description

{1} Location of former pond - remains as silted up feature. Was origionally triangular in plan up to 70m long by 50m wide. Remaining features include broad earthern dam at NW side, low prominent scarp to the east, a gentle scarp to the west and a small circular mound (approx 5m in diametre) in the southern portion. The latter feature was possibly the site of a former island (for possible fishpond). The pond is located within former open fields with ridge and furrow to the south, east and north.

{2} Site of pond located on map of 1615 in Neather Field. There is no reference to pond on Eagles maps of 1806, 1822 or 1856 or on O.S. map of 1885. The pond is again shown on maps of 1901 and 1952. Indicates that the pond may have fallen out of use for a period of time and was then possibly refurbished. The site of the pond only came within the boundary of the parkland in the 19th century - thus it is unlikly to have been a purely ornamental feature. The presence of the possible island may suggest the pond was origionally used for fish or wildfowl.
