Full Description

{1}Scarlet Well Street not named on map; leads from Scarlet Well to Mayorhold;

{2}Lane Leading from Scarlet Well to Mayorhold; modern name Scarletwell Street;

{3}Scarlet Well Lane leading from Scarlet Well to Mayorhold;

{4}Scarlet Well Street leading to Mayorhold;

{5} Scarletwell Lane or Street was the way leading down the Marehold to the well of that name. it was formerly a thoroughfare of some importance, as the small town hall, previous to 1300, was in this street.

{7} Henry Lee in his early 18th century manuscript history of Northampton {6} records that 'the Old Town Hall was in a little close adjoining the last house on the right hand in the lane going from Mayorhold to Scarlet Well'. Not considered convincing, preferring to situate an early guildhall in the centre of the Saxon town. However, an 'intermediate' Guildhall in Scarletwell Street, prior to its transfer to the All Saints area, cannot be discounted.

{8} Photo noted as being the site of the Scarlet Well, dated 7th February 1971;

{9} Photo of buildings noted as being rear of houses in Scarletwell Street dated 9th February 1956, now demolished;
