Full Description
{3} Farthinghoe was open field in 1600, when a terrier was made for Magdalen College, Oxford (Magd. Estate Records 77/7). It was enclosed by about 1612 (referred to in NRO C(A) 3406). The glebe estate of 1633 was enclosed.
There are two usable maps for Farthinghoe, NRO Map 3502 of 1805 and the Tithe map of 1841, NRO T139. Map 3502 includes a small part of Greatworth and pre-dates the tithe but it is an estate map and excludes lands not belonging to the estate. The tithe map has therefore been used for the base mapping with reference to the 1805 map for any significant changes between the two dates. There are no significant changes between the two maps within the township. There is no change in the plan form of the settlement from the tithe map to the 1880s OS map though there are changes to the pattern of closes around the rectory, which has been ‘imparked’ on a small scale and a large building added. Similarly there has been substantial change to the land around Farthinghoe Lodge to the south of the settlement. The hedges from eight enclosures have been removed and trees planted to create a ‘park’ with formal gardens added beside the house.
{4} The present plan of Farthinghoe, although distorted by the main road which runs through it, consists of a basic grid of three or four short north-south lanes bounded by two east-west roads and with an open space in the north east corner near the church. On a map of 1805 the west end of the northern east-west street is shown as extending further west completing the grid pattern of the village. By 1841 this part of the street had been abandoned and the area in which it lay was called 'Old Road'.
{8} The possible implications of the complex relationship between Newbottle, King's Sutton and Farthinghoe, are discussed in source {9}.
