Full Description
{1} Waterworks: a canal above 1/2 mile long and a cascade, a whole river running through the garden.
{6} The waterworks at Boughton the Duke of Montague's seat, in Northants, were compared to those of Versailles by the great Duke of Marlborough, to which the Duke of Montague replied "No my lord, my waterworks are not equal to the French king, but your Grace's fireworks were much superior."
{7} Brief account of waterworks.
{4} The canal at the Bottom of all, is about 1500 yards in length in four lines falling into each other at right angles. At the lower end of it is a very noble cascade. The walls, on each side of the cascade at the head of the basin that it falls into, are adorned with vases and statues. The cascade has five falls, the Perpendicular about seven feet. A line or range of jet d'eaus, in number thirteen, are placed at the head of the cascade and possess the interval where the water enters upon its first fall. These throw up their water, as that of the canal descends. A very agreeable and charming entertainment both to the Eye and ear, and a lovely refreshment to the standers-by in a hot and sultry air. There are also several jet d'Eaus in the basin underneath.
{5} 24th July 1710 " I dined at Cransley …….. Afterwards we were to Boughton, the Duke of Montague's. The first thing our sight was entertained with was the great cascade, which has an abundance of "Jette d'eau" and falls of water; the other waterworks are also very fine. From one pipe the water plays, as Mr Vander Muhl, the chief gardener said 58 feet high. The Gardens take up a great deal of ground, consisting most in shady walks, and in a pleasing irregularity embelished with Canals, and the water works.
{3} Chas. Hatton 1694 " There is great talk of vast gardens at Boughton; but I heard my Lord Montague is very much concerned that ye water with which he hope to make so fine fountains has failed his expectations".
{2} 1700 cascade at far SE corner of garden started as main succession of water gardens laid out starting at top of Grand Etang.1721 - reference to a canal being dug - presume stream winding through park joining Ralph's waterworks at NE corner of layout.1723 - John Topping made Duke's "Engineer and Surveyor of my waterworks at Boughton.1970's - 1990's - re-excavation of lake, canal and pond at Boughton.
