Full Description

{1} WW2 generator building. May be part of the BBC radio transmitting station or be associated with other wartime RAF activity.

{2} Armishaw writes that he visited the stand-by set house and notes that it is not like any standard RAF aircraft types. He speculates that it may be " a building found only on a 'Gee Station'? There is a small building which at first sight looks like..Home Guard Store, but is in fact the point where a large power cable emerges from the ground. There is also a large transformer compound protected by a blast wall. Part of this wall has bben removed, possibly to allow the plant to be recovered, which reveals an interesting and unusual construction method. The wall is brick-skinned concrete, which is stronger than the airfield equivalent."

{3} Photos of buildings;

{4} Brick building. The brick outer layer surrounds an inner core of concrete. The building appears to consist of two concrete gerator supports laid on a concrete floor. Surrouding this is a buttress supported wall to a height of two metres ten centimetres with an entrance on the south side. This entrance is protected on the inside by a blast wall. The south west wall of the outer entrance has been partially dismantled indicating its construction method. This structure is just one of numerous buildings of the period on and around Borough Hill.
