Full Description

{3} The date of abandonment of the earthwork remains is unknown though it is possible that the 'wasting' of two halls, a cottage and a 'sheepscote' carried out in 1380 by one Andrew Gyldford who then 'had the keeping of the manor of Crick … owing to the minority of the … Earl (of Nottingham)' may relate to this area. The evidence of the earthworks perhaps throws some light on the origins of the village's layout as it is now. The modern street plan of Crick consists of a peculiar arrangement of loops on either side of the present main road. However if the earthworks noted here are interpreted as former house sites and closes along an old NW-SE road then it is possible that the village originated along two roughly parallel streets.

{4} Crick is first recorded in Domesday Book by which time it was a substantial settlement. The survival of the earthworks in the village probably reflect a change in the location of the village either by a process of settlement drift or shrinkage. The earthworks might be the sites of properties known to have been abandoned in 1380. Two halls, a cottage and a sheepscote were 'wasted' by Andrew Gyldford who had the keeping of the manor at this time.
