Full Description
{1} Uncertain feature identified by owner of 23 Chancery Lane, Thrapston whilst digging a fishpond. Conjectural extent of the feature is shown on the plan. S. Kidd went out to observe. Stratigraphy was recorded as being 1.3m of gravelly loam over 0.5m of wet grey silty clay; this lay over a limestone rubble layer (c.1 stone thick - ie. not structural) over (?natural) sand. The wet grey silty clay was rich in molluscs - so taken for soil sample.
{2} Soil sample revealed large body of freshwater molluscs, including some species intolerant of poorly-oxygenated habitats or those subject to desiccation. A large body of permanent freshwater with a through-flow is indicated. Apart from charcoal scraps there was no evidence for refuse disposal in the feature whilst this layer formed, nor for organic pollution by an influx of foul water. For details of mollusc types see letter.
