Full Description

{1} Stone object found in garden of 59 Station Road, Irthlingborough at a depth of 5 feet. Object is a fragment of limestone mortar, presumably of medieval or post-medieval origin. Fragment comprises the rounded bottom part of a stone mortar. Two projecting lugs on rough tooled outer face. On underside of one lug is a shallow cut and two small round depressions. The general finish to the object is quite crude - possibly locally produced copy. Maximum dimensions 700mm high, diameter at base 1700mm, sides taper outwards and diameter at (broken) upper face c2000mm. Part of base of recess (800mm diameter) survives to a maximum depth of 12mm.
