Full Description
{1} Fieldwalking by A. Rollings. Limestone doric capital 14.5ins tall. Head 9 x 9ins and approximately 4.5ins high. Possibly part of a baluster (according to K.S.Painter at British Museum). Could be C4th date (cf. RCHME 'Eburacum Roman York' 1962 Fig.79 No11e).
{5} Fieldwalking by M. Holmes in April 1989. Romano-British pottery concentration in the south-west of field, down to the base of the slope. Possible continuation northwards of Roman settlement to the south (Mon 3200).
{6} Fieldwalking in April 1989 by M. Holmes. Romano-British pottery found, concentrated mainly on the west side of the field on higher ground. A limestone spread was noted, possibly indicating sub-surface structures. A discrete scatter of possible Iron Age pottery was found in the south-east part of the field. Flints were recovered from across the whole area of the field.
{7} Mr Rollings said this area of Roman occupation extends over three fields on the top of the river escarpment from SP 954688 to SP 955 694. He has a collection of finds from the site including the Doric fragment. The "top" of this is only roughly dressed however and this seems to suggest it to be a base rather that a capital. It is ultimately destined for Kettering Museum.
