Full Description
{1}Sub-circular feature measuring 1.05m by 0.8m and 0.2m deep recovered during trial trenching. Burnt limestone and a single sherd of Stamford ware were found within this context. Interpreted as a former stone-lined hearth or oven with a daub superstructure. The oven originally comprised a pit with a limestone base and daub walls. Heat from the oven had discoloured the limestone and "fired" the clay or daub superstructure. The function of the oven was not ascertained. Prior to the disuse of the oven the base had been thoroughly cleaned of burnt fuel.Above the hearth / oven was a layer of dark brownish grey silty sand which had formed naturally after the oven had gone out of use - this contained Early-middle Saxon pottery and 10th century Stamford wares.
