Full Description
{1} A number of features were observed over a number of months during the course of a housing development. An area of dark soil and burnt stones c2mx1.8m in area, possibly intercutting pits? Iron Age scored ware, Roman colour coat and Saxon pottery was all recovered. Another feature 1000mm wide and 450mm deep - found to contain dark soil, bone, slag and Saxon pottery.
Examination of foundation trenches across the site revealed numberous pits and ditches containing Iron Age pottery. Much of the western part of the site had been disturbed in the past, possibly by quarrying, although further Iron Age features were found here. A large amount of slag was seen in the extreme south-western trench, possibly indicating the presence of a furnace.
