Full Description

{1}Foster calls areas 1 and 11. Very close to each other and similar. Patchy areas of burnt subsoil. Small coal fragments in soil/clay layer. Small iron nails stratified with coal.Thought could be small iron ore roasting sites. The coal on site would suggest a late date-17th or 18th century. The small iron nails suggest the possibility of the coal being kept in a wooden coal box-possibly burnt with the coal as fuel. The black glazed pottery sherds could give a 17th century date?Nearby Mr. Foster has marked on his map a furnace (8358/0/1)
