Full Description

{1} The pits are locally known to have been at Huddiemoor, about half-way between Shutlanger village and The Round Plantation. A small pit is shown on the Second Edition OS Map (c.1900), and a small area of lower-level ground is still evident today.
Owners Towcester Iron Ore Co. The quarries are known to have existed in 1873/4 before the arrival of the Stratford-upon-Avon and Midland Junction line in 1891. It is thought that the ore was taken away by horse drawn wagon to Towcester via Easton Neston. It is also possible that these quarries were reopened in 1909 as The Showsley Quarries (Monument 8397/1).
