Type and Period (2)

Full Description

{1} Thirty two medieval coins (31 silver hammered pennies of Edward I dating from 1280-1310, 1 silver hammered coin of Alexander III of Scotland dated 1280-86) recovered during metal detecting. 16 of the coins were from the London mint, the remainder from Bristol, Lincoln, Canterbury, Newcastle, Kingston-Upon-Hull and Dublin. No container was recovered for the coins and they had become scattered during ploughing. The find spot is 400 metres from Banbury lane, a major medieval route into Northampton. It is possible that the coins were hidden by a merchant or farmer prior to entering Northampon in order to safe-guard them until his return from the town.
