Full Description
{1} The second major phase of the defensive works involved the insertion (or perhaps widening/relocation of) a western gateway. The gateway is likely to have been in use throughout the 11th century. The bank (from the earlier phase) was cut away to accomodate the gateway as only the southern side of the gateway was excavated the width of the feature is unknown. A large post pit in the terminal of the bank and a possible post-pit further to the west suggest that there was possibly a timber gatehouse which would have stood at an oblique angle to the revetment wall and would have abutted the southern side of the structure.
