Building record 7159/1/2 - WWII Pillbox, west bank of River Nene

Second World War Type 25 pillbox (variant) constructed without roof. Erosion by the river has left the pillbox overhanging the river and half of its foundations exposed. On private land on East end of Power Station site on the South side of River Nene, Nunns Mill Road, Northampton.

{1} Concrete pillbox located on south side of River Nene. Appears to face east, downstream, commanding a bend in the river. Occupies land formerly belonging to National Power, part of the nearby power station. Pillbox currently inaccesible and heavily covered in vegetation but is just visible from north bank of the river. Also marked on the OS plans. Presumed of World War II origin.

{2} Circular pillbox (Type 25) constructed without a roof. The original loopholes have been reduced in size with concrete. The pillbox retains original exterior green paint in places. The pillbox located on the eastern end of the power station site next to the river. At the time of the report the pillbox was overhanging the river and half of the foundations were exposed due to erosion.

{9} Type 25 pillbox (variant) constructed without roof. The original embrasures have been reduced in size with concrete. The pillbox retains original exterior green paint in places. Area C/O, B. Lowry, suggests it could be a Norcon pillbox.
