Full Description

{1}A shallow linear trench seen in Trench 2 as a timber slot and also in Trench 4. In Trench 4 the trench was overlapped and partly filled with ironstone rubble. This was so poorly bonded that it was not possible to say whether it was part of a wall or part of a hardstanding.

{2} An east-west aligned spread of ironstone rubble within a clay matrix may be the disturbed remains of a wall. Four sherds of pottery recovered from the construction cut include one tiny sherd of Stamford ware and three in the later, ornage version of St Neots type ware. Suggesting a date in the early 12th century. This part of the site was preserved in situ and the wall was not invetigated further. It does not appear to be a building and is the only stone-built structure found dating to this period. It may indicate a new land division laid out at the beginning of Northampton's period of economic expansion and is oriented roughyl parallel to the western end of St May's Street.
