Full Description

{1}Beneath the modern overburden excavated from Trench 5 lay the natural ironstone. Cut into this were three large medieval pits. Into the top of one of the pits had been set an irregular foundation which was locally but severely scorched. All of the features were medieval.

{3} A small area of sandstone flagstones overlay a pit from the same period and thus are likely to have been laid towards the end of the period 1150-1300. The flagstones may have been the base for a hearth. The structure was not fully excavated and no building was found in association with it. The scorching may have occurred during a previous use of the flag. It is possible that this feature was associated with a surface-laid timber-building which lay to the east, fronting onto Horsemarket, but which did not survive archaeologically.
