Full Description

{1}100mm thick medieval soil cut by a pit. Its fills produced exclusively medieval or earlier pottery. The soil was further removed and two stake holes cut into the red loam. These produced pottery of late Saxon and early medieval date.

{3} Part of a sunken-featured building was found in an evaluation trench. It was 2.07m long, over 1.4m wide and 0.5m deep, with vertical sides, a flat base and a posthole against its east and west sides. The primary deposit contained St Neot's type and Northampton ware pottery dating to between 850-1150. Above this a layer of charcoal may indicate that the building burnt down or that it was dismantled and the non-reusable material was deliberately burnt. It was then partially backfilled with rubble, followed by silty clay containing charcoal, further similar pottery and a fragment of a ceramic mould.
