Full Description

{1} {2} Domesday mentions the village of Chelverdescote: this is possibly the predecessor of Newnham

{4} Newnham is not mentioned in Domesday, but it has been suggested by Hart that the otherwise lost Chelverdescote which is recorded there was Newnham by another name. As a result of Hart's identification of Chelverdescote with Newnham it is suggested that the large western green might be the site of the original Chelverdescote from which the rest of the village developed. One reason for this suggestion is that the part of Newnham south of the green which projects souoth of the River Nene is shown on the draft Enclosure Map and the Enclosure Map of 1765 as an area of old enclosures quite distinct from the common fields of the rest of the parish. These enclosures were then called Cott Lands. Skelton put forward the theory that the name perhaps reflects a connection with Chelverdescote which could therefore have lain close by.

{5} Old enclosures in the part of Newnham parish that project south across the River Nene

{6} Listed with a population of 14 in Domesday. Unidentified manor, mentioned again in 12th century survey of the county. Perhaps near Everdon Magna.
