Summary

A World War Two battle headquarters at Hinton-in-the-Hedges Airfield. The battle headquarters was intended to be the hub of the former Royal Air Force station's wartime ground defences. It may have been built in 1941, it was constructed according to design 11008/41: i.e. it was a sunken reinforced concrete and brick feature with only an observation post visible at one end. When the battle headquarters was recorded in 1995 it was in fair condition although prone to flooding. The battle headquarters is surrounded by 2 cantilevered pillboxes, earth revetments and seagull trenches.

{1} Type 11008/41 battle Headquarters surrounded by two 'mushroom' cantilever pillboxes with earth revetment, and three seagull trenches. Brickwalls with cement facing + concrete roof." Fair condition. "Battle HQ periodically fills with water which has removed cement facing from brickwork. Sketch plan, location plan, four colour photographs, extract plans and scale plans and sections. Identified on War Ministry Record Site Plan as building No 65.

{2} A World War Two battle headquarters noted on the Defence of Britain Database at "RAF Hinton-in-the-Hedges Airfield", Hinton-in-the-Hedges, Northamptonshire, SP 550 372. The defence of Britain Database record states that it was built "in the period 1940-1941", it was constructed according to design 11008/41(however the suffix "41" in the drawing/ design number suggests that it could not have been built earlier than 1941). When the battle headquarters was recorded in 1995 it was in fair condition although prone to flooding. The battle headquarters was surrounded by 2 cantilevered pillboxes, earth revetments and seagull trenches.
