Monument record 3980/0/38 - Air Raid Shelter

Remains of Second World War air raid shelter at Glendon Road.

{},{1}ME & GC met at the site for a rapid inspection with Mr Royall on 11 November 1998. Access to the interior was not possible and will require permission from Mr Frost.The shelter is located at NGR SP81978115, on the north side of Glendon Road a short distance east of the town centre. It comprises a single storey rectangular structure built end on to road. The garage's concrete forecourt has raised the ground level abutting and obscuring the lower west elevation of the shelter. No information was available as to date of construction or interior condition. Mr Royall believes the shelter was built as a public surface shelter. If so this may be a very rare survival of a type of shelter widespread in urban parts of the county in the early 1940's. Most surface shelters were demolished by 1946. The structure was photographed.
