Full Description

{1} Oral report saying that a territ was found on Sponne School Playing fields. Also a Late Iron Age metal object. Also believed to be found was a Centurions Badge but it is not sure if this was from the playing fields as well.

{2} Because of centurions badge found and the alignment of ditches that C. Woodfield and A. Hannan saw (part of Fina petrol filling station site <C Woodfield unsure of name>) it is believed that if a geophysical survey was carried out on the school playing fields to the east a fort may be seen.

{3} To date the only evidence to support a military association or even foundation for the subsequent Roman town is provided by a small group of dress metalwork considered to be of military origin. A bronze ‘Centurion’s’ pendant dating from the mid first century AD was discovered at Sponne School . A similar example was found at the legionary fortress at Colchester.

{4} Unstratified pottery sherds from the Sponne School site may have possible military origins. The sherds include part of a Hofheim flagon.
