{1}The 'long border' was over 400ft long and contained a marvellous host of shrubs, perennials and annuals.,

{3}The main feature of the gardens in 1883 was the long border, nearly 400ft in length with a great variety of plants. To achieve this length the border must have been curved across the south and west fronts of the house. It was always hand-weeded and mulched with manure every season.
