Full Description

{1} Fieldwalking to the north of the farm produced finds of kiln debris and burnt clay and large quantities of medieval pottery including jug sherds. The pottery was collected by the farmer.

{2} Settlement remains centred SP 791497 around Elms Farm and Hartwell End Farm. No documentary sources record the name or history of the site. Earthworks include trackways linking the farms to Hartwell Green village and S to the common fields. An L-shaped ditch immediately SE of Elms Farm may be the remains of a rectangular moat. Pottery from adjacent fields is mostly C13th or C14th in date, and includes kiln debris suggesting local pottery production.
This site, along with others in the parish [SP 74 NE 11,12,16,18; SP 75 SE 27] suggests a dispersed medieval settlement pattern consisting of hamlets with the single large village (Hartwell Green) a relatively recent development.

{4} Adjacent to remains of the medieval settlement and possible moated site; the fields contain mostly C13th/C14th pottery and kiln debris suggesting local pottery production. Slowikowski suggests this to be the result of fieldwalking which turned up C13th/C14th pottery similar to Olney Hyde shelly. Kiln debris and pottery including jugs were present. The material is held in a private collection. He suggests that the fieldwalking was undertaken in 1991.
