Full Description
{1} The earthwork is situated on a tabular west-east ridge, but appears higher within its limits as a north-south ridge, and it is not clear how much this owes to the topography and how much to a build up of level within the earthwork. T. Welsh says that the enclosure is favourably sited, elevated above its immediate surroundings, and seems out of place in the layout of the open fields, such that it is likely to be older, and determined the pattern of the ridge and furrow here.
{2} Originally T Welsh believed that the enclosure was a defensive enclosure possibly earlier than medieval with some characteristics of a Roman fort, or possibly Saxon. However, it needs to put into a proper context in relation to communications and other activities around it. T Welsh says that the real test , if it was located on a line of communication south, earlier than the origins of the present London Road, it needs a means of ascent of the steep hillside north of Hardingstone. (T. Welsh then speculates on the place of the enclosure within the landscape.)
