Monument record 2416/0/216 - Medieval refuse dump

{1}Trench 1 contained a 0.2m thick deposit of dark grey brown clayey sand which contained occasional patches of yellow clay, frequent sub angular limestone pieces, charcoal and ceramic building material. A single piece of early to mid c13th pottery and a fragment of sheep bone was recovered from this layer, which most probably represents a dumped deposit.
Trench 3 contained a layer of greenish grey silty clay which contained fragments of sub angular limestone together with abundant animal bone, oyster and mussel shell. A moderately large quantity of later c15th pottery was found in association with this material, which probably represents an accumulation of domestic refuse.
