Full Description
{1} Anderson shelters were being demonstrated on the racecourse in June 1939. Believed to have been demolished.
{2} Anderson Shelters were demonstrated on The Racecourse. The shelters were so-named after Sir John Anderson, Chairman of the committee which originally recommended them for domestic use. By April 1939 almost 300,000 had been delivered, and 1.5 million by the outbreak of war. They were built to accommodate four people, but could take six if necessary. They were provided free to households with an income of less than £250 per annum. They were effective against all but a very near miss or direct hit, but one major defect was their tendency to flood.
{3} Anderson shelters were being demonstrated on the racecourse in June 1939. These are believed to have since been demolished.
