Full Description

{1} Building II: Dairy Shed
5 plus 2 bay range of stone walls and gables, curved stonework to north east corner. Timber frame and boarded front (east). Main part 5 bay with fine coursed walls. Roof much as building I, with ties and cross rafters and applied clasped-purlin collars (nailed to front) to single side purlins. Elm, with flush faces to north and waney edges south i.e. made of halved timber. Corrugated asbestos covering. West side has five modem windows (brick jambs externally). East side to yard has timber frames, rebuilt below in concrete, with jowled posts to wallplate, and small intermediate studs flanking windows (part glazed and part slatted); all this seems to be contemporary. Internal fittings of iron and concrete for milking or feeding cows, with galvanised sheeting on east wall and floor drain.
South end: 2 bay with plain purlins strutted from tiebeam between stone walls (i.e. not framed); one door and window to front, straight joints suggest window was formerly doorway. Connecting door to main part. Two modern windows on west matching those in main building, one with old timber lintel, end window formerly door, corresponding to feature in east wall. Hole in north wall suggest possibly lofted at that end (but no sign of this on tiebeam). Former door in west wall suggests change in floor level. Sill of window is just above existing floor level but straight joint visible externally extending to lower external floor level. 19th century, with modern alterations. An earlier building is shown on the same site on an estate map of 1763. Traditional cattle shed, modified for dairy, replacing earlier building on site.
