Full Description

{1}Crown Brewery; 4 storey building of 6 bays; built by John Elsworthy in 1885;

{2}Brewery and maltings originally owned by John Elworth and his son William and in operation from 1880 to 1930; one of the few breweries in the county showing the basic form of a small brewery.

In 1880 tenders were recieved for the construction of a new brewery for John Elsworthy, who had previously been brewing at a site bounded in the north by Gold Street and east by Silver Street. In 1896 it was known as the Steam Brewery. There is a datestone of 1904 with the initials 'JE' on the side of the malt kiln. It was known as the Crown Brewery from 1906.

Complex of buildings on awkwardly shaped site - buildings comprise malt kiln, malt house and brewhouse. Frontage is of brick with 4 storeys and 6 bays. The building assumed to have accommodated the storage and germination floors of the maltings is at an unusual angle to the malt kiln which is surmounted by a pyramid-type slate roof and topped by a tall, elaborate cowl. Ceased to be used as brewery in 1930 when it was acquired by Marston, Thompson and Evershed Ltd; now occupied by a number of small businesses.,

{4} Crown Brewery, Tanners Lane / Northall Street
Former maltings for Crown Brewery. The building is of red brick with a quadrangular cowl on top. It is now used as a furniture warehouse. Film 3, photo 21-24. Film 4, photo 4,5.

{5}Former maltings belonging to the Elworthy Family brewing Co - a brief history of which is provided from the book Brewed in Northants. Building recognised as a Maltings because of tall lead cupola on top of a steeply sloping Welsh slate roof. Remarkable for its apparent intactness (usually the cupolas are removed because of the unnecessary maintenance costs they incur.) Building in brick built of 4 storeys with six bays to roadside elevation. Curious window arrnagement possibly due to function. Construction date believed to be 1904. Possible candidate for listing.
