Full Description

{1} Though the earthwork remains are slight they emphasise the relatively simple layout of the village before it was disrupted by the construction of the Grand Junction Canal in 1800. Until then the village probably consisted of a single street extending from the church in the south-west to the Green. The main street was blocked by the canal, except for pedestrian use, and traffic was diverted in a broad loop to the north on which all subsequent development has been based. The Rectory garden and the new graveyard have obliterated any trace of the original street between the canal and the church but a modern footpath follows the approximate line.
